Collecting is simply valuing a specific type of item.
It is also important to distinguish between hoarding and collecting. Collectors are proud of their collections and enjoy displaying them.
I am probably a HYBRID HOARDER. However…I have always been a collector. And I would tilt toward not being able to display my collection due to space.. and then there’s always holding on to things you made needed someday. “It's better to have and not need than to need and not have”
I always maintain some type of organized chaos. After visiting my father and stepmother one summer, I was exposed to a new upgraded kitchen that she and my father refurbished in Cleveland. I remember tall open shelves that displayed the jars along with a ladder that moved around the kitchen so you could access the jars. Her closets were very organized as well. I think that experience left me with everything that needs a place.
Every item was in a large (gallon size) glass jar with labels like rice and beans, along with glass jars filled with spices. This was in the late sixties. Our cupboard ( at moms’) as I can remember was nondescript neat and tidy but mostly canned goods (as they are called.).
When I was growing up as an only child, I really treasured my belongings. I took very good care of what I owned. And I really loved clothes and wanted to be a fashion designer. I held on to my Barbie's and my diary that had a piece of Jackie Wilson 's "Lonely Teardrops" ripped silk shirt until I went…Off to college.
I continued collecting all kinds of 60s paraphernalia. However as with any possession they are hard to keep up with, when you don't have a permanent place to store your items. After college I permanently left home .AS most Moms redecorate your room and out went my diary along with anything else that was mine Barbie's, Bride Dolls, Posters all of my favorite singles and my first ever purchased single by The Isley Brothers “Twist and Shout”.
Fast Forward 40 years later and I have managed to keep a few favorite items from my glorious career in "The Music Business" (A niche business under the Umbrella of The Entertainment Business). Along the way there were lots of yard sales and goodwill drop offs that numerous treasures have since gone to.
Alan my husband of 25 years and I worked in the “Music Business'' together for in marketing and promotion of Hip Hop and R&B music .Both of us had been working in the business about 20 years before we met. We saved various letters and Grammy party exclusive invites from various Record Company Executive or Music Artists that we worked with for a large scrapbook of our legacy. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Alan passed in 2014 I have housed for many years all of our CDs, books, Lps, cassettes, VHS and DVD and art. Thousands of dollars later and giving a lot of the merchandise away I have decided to release what's left of the treasure trove of memories
A few posters here and there and probably about 100 t shirts it's all up for sale, After that we will see what's the next step....
